In 2012, climate change activists, after years of fighting the fossil fuel companies,

decided to go on the offensive.

They came up with an ambitious plan.

Dear Regent Sherman and UC Regents,

As leaders of the University of California, you have been endowed with a choice. You can choose to continue financing climate chaos and environmental injustice or move the UC’s endowment beyond fossil fuels. Climate change is real and accelerating, and as members of the UC community we refuse to contribute to the crisis, let alone profit from it. Under your leadership, we can join a growing movement of schools around the country and the world that are making the right choice for current and future generations, the planet, and their endowment portfolios¬†by divesting from fossil fuels.

We call on the University of California to immediately freeze any new investment in the 200 coal, oil, and natural gas companies with the largest carbon reserves, and to divest within five years from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include equities and corporate bonds in these companies. In addition, we urge the UC to actively explore reallocating divested funds towards climate solutions.

Already, we are witnessing the devastating effects of a warming planet: record-breaking heat, droughts, and hurricanes. These events have impacted millions of people and cost our country hundreds of billions of dollars. Moreover, the extraction, refinement, and burning of fossil fuels threatens the daily health and well-being of communities throughout California and around the world. Remaining invested in an industry fueling climate chaos and environmental injustice runs contrary to the University of California’s stated values, goals, and commitment to climate leadership.

For the sake of students, communities near and far, and the welfare of current and future generations worldwide, we call on you to move the University of California’s endowment beyond fossil fuels.
